About Orange Calcite

Orange Calcite is a colourful variety of Calcite, one of the most common carbonate minerals on Earth. Its warm orange, peach, apricot and honey tones are generally produced by trace impurities, iron-rich material or other colouring agents incorporated during formation. Like all Calcite, Orange Calcite is composed of calcium carbonate and belongs to the trigonal crystal system. It is relatively soft, has perfect rhombohedral cleavage and reacts readily with acids. Calcite can form in an enormous range of geological environments, including limestone, caves, hydrothermal veins, sedimentary deposits and altered rocks. Orange Calcite is especially popular in polished forms such as spheres, towers, palmstones, carvings and freeforms because polishing brings out its colour, cloud-like banding and translucent internal patterns. Although Orange Calcite is commonly sold within the crystal trade as its own named variety, it is not a separate mineral species. It is Calcite whose colour falls within the orange to honey range.

From the Earth

How it forms

The geological processes that create this crystal over time.

Formation

Its geological story

Orange Calcite forms when calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral-rich fluids or develops during sedimentary, hydrothermal or metamorphic processes. It commonly forms in limestone, caves, mineral veins and cavities within rock. Its orange colouring is generally caused by trace impurities or iron-rich material present during crystal growth. Calcite may form as crystals, massive material, fibrous growths, stalactitic deposits or layered sedimentary material.

Scientific notes

Orange Calcite is a colour variety of Calcite rather than a separate mineral species. Calcite is one of several naturally occurring forms of calcium carbonate and has the same chemical formula as Aragonite, CaCO₃, but a different crystal structure. Calcite is trigonal while Aragonite is orthorhombic. One of Calcite’s most famous optical properties is double refraction. Clear Calcite can split incoming light into two rays, causing objects viewed through the crystal to appear doubled. Orange Calcite may show cloudy zones, bands or patches caused by variations in impurities and crystal growth.
